The History of Raleigh

Named after Sir Walter Raleigh (sponsor of the "lost colony" on Roanoke Island), Raleigh is one of few cities in the U.S. that was planed and created specifically for the purpose of serving as the county seat and state capital. It was incorporated in 1792 and charter granted a few years later. The street grid was laid out using the 1682 set of plans for Philadelphia.
 
The city leaders surrendered during the end of the Civil War as Sherman's army approached, saving the city from the destruction that Union forces regularly inflected on Southern cities. The city stagnated in the decades after the Civil War, along with the rest of North Carolina, as the region was so heavily dependent on agriculture.
 
The early part of the 1900's saw the city of Raleigh battle a pandemic, establish the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, and open the first airport. Briefly interrupted by the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent Great Depression, Raleigh rebounded and continued unprecedented growth through the rest of the 20th century. Part of North Carolina's Research Triangle, Raleigh was ranked #1 in the 2015 Forbes list of best places for businesses and careers.
