The History of Marathon
Possibly named by laborers who were complaining that the tireless work to complete Flagler's railway to Key West was becoming a "real marathon", the word marathon was later used to describe the local railroad station.
Marathon is comprised of thirteen islands which have been inhabited for centuries, the City of Marathon was only incorporated in 1999.
While fishing is an important to all of the Florida Keys, Marathon in particular is a major destination for serious sport fishing with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. Historically, the fish markets in Miami would buy nearly all the fresh fish coming into Marathon, ice it down, and bring it back up to Miami.
The large number of reefs in the area also make it a popular destination for diving and snorkeling. Marathon is home to both the tallest building in the Keys (Bonefish Tower) and the only country club in the Keys (Sombrero Country Club).
Marathon is also home to the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport and is a one-hour drive from Key West International Airport.
