The Purple Island
Thought to be named by early Spanish explorers as the "purple island", Islamorada is located directly between Miami and Key West.
Establishment of the Islamorada post office and railroad stop around 1908 helped to establish the location of Islamorada (previously, it was just referenced as Upper Matecumbe Key).
Islamorada suffered a near direct hit by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 (known as Hurricane Three as they didn't name them at the time). Hurricane Three was a monster storm with maximum sustained winds of 185mph. An eleven car train near Islamorada was washed off the tracks from powerful waves and storm surge that hit it. The storm took the lives of some 423 people and a memorial to them exists today at mile-marker 82.
While referred to as Islamorada for much of the 20th century, it was not until 1998 that its four livable islands were officially incorporated as "Islamorada, Village of Islands".
Filming of the popular Netflix series Bloodline took place in and around Islamorada, bringing a new level of attention and notoriety to the area.
