The History of Bunnell
One of the oldest communities on the east coast of Florida, Bunnell is named after it's founder, Alvah Bunnell who set up a wood-mill in the area in the late 1800's to supply local railroads with fuel for their wood-burning locomotives.
Bunnell's roots are start with the railroad industry. Soon after moving to the area, Alvah Bunnell and set up a shingle mill to provide the local railroads with fuel for their wood-burning locomotives.
Frank Lambert (Major Lambert) along with Isaac Moody later formed a partnership to purchase Bunnell's shingle mill along with another 30,000 acres for the purposes of "timber and turpentine".
After several years of operating the turpentine business, the Bunnell Development Company was chartered in 1909 and the land was surveyed into 10-20 acre parcels which were sold for agricultural/farm use and the town name of Bunnell was agreed upon.
The town of Bunnell was incorporated in 1913 and is the county seat of Flagler County. Today, it is home to barely a few thousand residents and has maintained its focus on farming and its agricultural roots.
