The History of Chester
With the newly formed Chester County was in need of a county seat, the city of Chester was founded in 1785.
The completion of the Columbia-Chester railroad was completed in 1851 and the town experience a fair amount of growth.
The convergence of several railroad lines and the concentration of textile industry businesses nearby, Chester became a shipping and rather busy commercial center.
Chester faired poorly after WWII as the focus of returning GI's were homes with big yards in the suburbs. Also, as newly constructed (and airconditioned) malls and shopping centers were built in the suburbs, the Chester's downtown shopping district suffered greatly leaving many storefronts vacant.
Today, Chester is on the rebound after benefiting from several downtown improvement projects; some funded by dedicated store merchants and some funded by local and state governments. The work continues, and not without recognition as Chester was recently honored as the "Best Hometown" in the entire state!
