The History of Spartanburg

spartanburg south carolina logoWhile towns and cities are often named after people, animals, plants, rivers and other landmarks, Spartanburg is named after the Revolutionary War Regiment that shares its name. Spartanburg was officially incorporated in 1831 and earned the nickname of the "Hub City" due to the various railroad lines that run through it.

The early history of the city, like many in South Carolina, can be summed up in one word: textiles. At it's peak, Spartanburg was home to over 40 textile mills which fueled the city growth for nearly half a century and it was sometimes referred to as the "Lowell of the South".

During the post-WWI era, as textile manufacturing was slowly moved offshore, the city suffered the consequences and then embarked on a downtown revitalization project in an attempt to diversify the economy. That effort, along with the nearby BMW manufacturing plant employing over 8,000, has lead to a resurgence of the area.

Spartanburg also hosts the NFL's Carolina Panther's training camp and at one time, hosted the minor league team for the Philadelphia Phillies.
